October 20, 2008 Tax Bill Information Update
For Your Information A situation that has given the Town of Conover absolutely no recourse, has emerged and has changed dramatically, the way that things will play out this year differently than in the past. This will affect the mailing out of the tax bills as well as finalization of the 2009 budget. I have taken pride in the way that the Town has given a fair, timely and detailed explanation to our tax base in advance of the budget hearings and mailing of the tax bills. Currently, the assessment roll is being worked on and properties that have divided or been improved due to structural additions are still not completed or inspected. The moving of the assessment process into December will put an extremely difficult strain upon the Office of the Town Treasurer. Although at this time, I can not predict a date of the mailing of your tax bill, it will be later in December that normal and I ask that you be patient as I have had to be, in light of this difficult situation. There is no fast way of getting the bills out other than working long and tiresome hours in separating, stuffing, sealing and stamping. Conover’s dog owners must also have an application inserted and this must be done manually. Financial institutions who handle home mortgages also are in need of copies of the tax statements so that payments can be timely made before the end of the year which puts much pressure on the Treasurer. There are no office assistants or deputy treasurer so I ask for your cooperation. Please watch for updated details on this Website to ease your curiosity. James M.
