SPECIAL NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNERS
911 System – Fire and Street Addresses In June of 2007, the Vilas
County Board of Supervisors approved the Uniform Addressing System
Ordinance (Ch 28 of the General Code) and created a Vilas County
Address Coordinator. All addresses and road names will comply with
the ordinance. The new and established guidelines may affect you now
or in the future with the discovery of conflicting numbers or numbers
that are not consistent with the GPS coordinates. Property owners in
Conover are responsible for maintenance of their fire numbers.
Existing numbers can be maintained by repainting the sign. New
assignments of numbers or replacements are billed at cost to the
property owner. The color for Conover is white letters or numbers on
a green background.
911 Emergency Response – Fire and Ambulance During the Conover
Fire/EMS Annual Blueberry Pancake Breakfast in July, have you paid
attention to the size of the vehicles and equipment that these
emergency services have to adequately respond to calls. If you have
not, let me tell you that they are LARGE and very EXPENSIVE.
Regulations have been enacted by the State and right down to the local
government to insure that these vehicles have legal backing when it
comes to responding to properties. There are many residences and
summer residences, that have road access and driveways that make it
impossible for these vehicles to go where they are needed. A
department can charge for personnel and equipment when responding to
paged calls but additionally, they can charge for damages to the
equipment caused by narrow, un-cleared driveways. The driveway
ordinance for Conover was enacted in 2001 and amended in 2003.
Ordinance No. 90-01-D Section 2. sub (3) states “ To adequately
provide emergency services and fire protection while insuring safe and
unobstructed entry and exit from properties with the Town of Conover,
the follow minimum standards shall be met:
A. Minimum Road surface width …………… 14 feet
B. Minimum Width Clearance……………….. 20 feet
C. Minimum Height Clearance……………… 14 feet
and sub (4) states Driveways shall be free and clear of low hanging
limbs and overhanging brush on the traveled surface. Please do not
wait to be given a citation for violation.
Winter Snow Removal Keep a distance (minimum) of 200 feet back from
a Highway Department snowplow, grader or any emergency snow removal
equipment. IT’S THE LAW! It is also illegal to push snow from a
driveway on one side of the road to the ditch on the other side.
Moving snow or any debris from one side to the other is ILLEGAL. It
not only is dangerous, the variance in the direction of movement of
the blade causes ridges and depressions that are not ordinarily on a
road which is plowed in the direction of travel (not across it).
Should a vehicle be thrown in a ditch or hit debris cause by this
illegal act, the perpetrator of this action, will be prosecuted.
Section 86.01 and 346.94(5) Wisconsin Statutes
Zoning (Building Permits:) Rule of thumb – Permit is REQUIRED if you
alter or change the footprint of an existing structure or place a new
structure on the property. WHAT IS A STRUCTURE ? A structure is
defined as: “Something erected, constructed or placed that is
designed or used for sheltering people, animals, plants or for storing
various items which is not readily moved or disassembled and includes
fences, garages, sheds, manufactured utility sheds, enclosures placed
over framework to shelter or cover something.” These so called
temporary boat and car shelters with or without sides covered with a
plastic or fibered tarp materials is a structure recognized by both
the Town and County. Assessments for Conover are now being contracted
to: Bowmar Appraisal Inc.
